Deaf People Are Normal
This is something that does get on my nerves quite a lot of the time and it is of course how deaf people are treated differently to the normal people of the world and I have seen this countless times. The worst time in fact was when I was visiting someone in hospital and another relative came in. I knew she was deaf because I had spoken to her before which meant that I also knew how intelligent this lady was as well. So you can imagine how annoyed I was getting when everyone was treating her like she was a five year old girl. Yes I can understand that people perhaps need to raise their voiced for the sound to get through the hearing aid but there is no need to talk to her like she is an idiot.
This is most certainly not the only ever case I have sen happening. Are these people stupuid themselves or is there actually a reason behind it?
Well more often than not people do just not understand what it is like to be deaf and often think that just because someone is deaf it means they are dumb too and this is so not the case. It must be very hard to sit there and get treated like an idiot when you are not one.
So the main thing to remember is that unless you know for a fact that the deaf person you are talking to is also suffering from a mental condition there is no way that you should be talking to them like they are stupid.
