Infertility Symptoms – Definitions
When a couple cannot have a baby after 12 months of regular and unprotected intercourse, they can be classified infertile. Infertility is the inability to have a baby.
Couples respond in different ways after being told they are infertile. Extreme reactions are most noted in couples that are childless.
Infertility, in couples that have never had a child, is referred to as primary infertility.
On another note, secondary infertility refers to the condition where couples who already succeeded in having a baby are finding problems conceiving again.
The Man Factor
Various factors, both emotional and physical, can lead to infertility.
Infertility cases in men, like low sperm count, retrograde ejaculation, scarring from sexually transmitted diseases, hormone deficiency, and impotence, make up approximately 30-40% of cases.
Intake of prescription drugs like nitrofurantoin, cimetidine and spironolactone and even frequent marijuana use can negatively affect sperm count.
Being Female
Ovarian cysts, tumors, pelvic infection, hormonal imbalances, ovarian dysfunction, enometriosis, fallopian tube abnormalities, scarring from STD are some examples of “female factors.” These are the primary causes of 40 to 50 per cent of infertility cases.
Risk factors contributed by both the male and the female, in addition to other unknown causes, comprise 10 to 30% of infertility cases.
It has been found that a small number, just 10 to 20%, of couples fail to conceive after trying for a year. It is very crucial for couples to contine trying to have a baby at least for 12 months.
Age-Related Factors
Couples who are healthy, are below 30 years old, and have intercourse frequently have just a 25 to 30 per cent chance a month of conceiving. Women in their 20s are at the peak of their fertility. The likelihood of pregnancy for women above 35 years old is less than 10% each month, even less for those beyond 40 years old.
Other Non Age-Related Factors
Infertility is not solely blamed on age-related factors. The risk of infertility is also heightened because of the following factors:
* Having had sex with more than one partner
* Sexually transmitted infections
* Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) history
* Men with epididymitis or orchitis history
* Males who’ve had mumps
* Vein engorgement in the scrotum
* A history that includes exposure to DES
* Eating disorders among women
* Irregular menstruation and anovulation
* Endometriosis
* A blockage in the cervix or uterine defects
* Long-term disease like diabetes
