Policing With Deaf People
There have been many instances where the police have actually gotten things wrong because they are not giving a person who is deaf a chance to explain what they are doing. This is happening even more at night when a police officer is shining a light into a dead persons car, trust me this makes all of the difference. Not all deaf people can read the lips despite the fact that many people can, so just take this into consideration. Even if the deaf person could actually read what the officer is saying it would be very hard to do so in the light caused by the officers torch. What can someone that is deaf do in a situation like this?
Most instances a deaf person will try to find the document they have with them that explains they are deaf but the police officer isnt to know that is what they are going after. An officer who hasn’t instructed the person to reach anywhere would immediately start shouting at the person to stop doing what they are doing and then point their sidearm at the deaf persons face. If a deaf person is bending over and facing the other way whilst the officer is shouting at them then you may see what could happen.
To be fair I do see it from the police officers point of view, they have no idea what the person is reaching for, they could in fact not be going after their hearing aid but a gun or a knife and sometimes it just isn’t worth risking to wait and see. Police officers simply need a small bit of training when it comes to a situation like this, it would easily sort things out.
If you think that your hearing is starting to suffer from hearing loss why not go and get yourself checked out. You could look into getting hearing protection for musicians to be on the safe side. Go and get yourself a hearing aid assessment.
