Ringing Ears Treatment – What Are the Available Medical Treatment Options?
Tinnitus is a condition where you hear sound or noise that does not present in the real world. As regard to the treatments for tinnitus, there are not many medical treatment options to choose from.
Up till now there is no proven medical treatment – drug or surgery – that specifically targets tinnitus. Still, you can seek a certain degree of relief through a number of non-specific medical therapies.
1. Drugs
Challenges remain in the quest for a tinnitus-targeted medical treatment for tinnitus. Currently medicines that are used to treat tinnitus include antidepressants, drugs to treat Alzheimer’s Disease, and lignocaine (a local anesthetic).
While some of those drugs appear to confer short-term tinnitus relief, some demonstrated different efficacies. So far no firm evidence is available to prove the efficacy of these agents in stopping tinnitus for good. Furthermore, those medicines are associated with undesirable effects.
2. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
CBT may offer some benefits if you want to quickly cope with ringing ears. It is commonly used together with noise therapy. The objective of the therapy is for the tinnitus patient to learn how to ignore the ringing or buzzing sound. However, you should be aware that CBT does not make the sound go away, or treat the underlying causes of tinnitus.
3. Tinnitus maskers
You may find great relief using a tinnitus masker, a device worn like a hearing aid that provides a low-level sound to cover up (i.e. mask) the tinnitus, so that you can fall asleep without being bothered by the incessant ringing in your ears. As a matter of fact, if your main concern with tinnitus is trouble falling asleep, the noise of radio, a fan, or white noise machine is the only aid needed to get rid of the problem.
4. Tinnitus retraining therapy
Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) is also another form of treatment that many tinnitus patients found helpful.
For tinnitus patients, searching and trying different medical treatment for tinnitus have become one of their immediate goals in life. However, no definite medical solution for tinnitus has been found to date. The only way to get rid of tinnitus permanently is by addressing the underlying disorder that causes tinnitus to develop. You can learn to alleviate your tinnitus with natural tinnitus remedies.
