Tinnitus Medication: The Current Status
There aren’t any easy answers or uniform practices when it comes to treatment options for tinnitus. Recently, researchers have conducted studies that are designed to craft tinnitus medication by focusing on the interaction between nerve cells in the brain and neurotransmitters like glutamate. This is due to the discovery that tinnitus can frequently be caused by too much glutamate that is released by damaged nerve cells in the ear. One of the causes of this nerve damage in the inner ear, as well as the excessive glutamate that results, is exposure to toxic medication or excessively-loud noises and sounds.
Glutamate is a naturally occurring neurotransmitter but an overabundance of glutamate in the body creates a dangerous imbalance that can cause the brain to function improperly. To align the neurotransmitter imbalance use anti-seizure medications like Neurontin to activate GABA receptors to stop the nonstop neurotransmitter activity caused by the excess amounts of glutamate.
Medicines like Xanax and Valium which are used for the treatment of anxiety are examples of drugs that have shown success as a tinnitus medication. Many doctors have started prescribing these types of drugs, in combination with anti-seizure medications for patients suffering from tinnitus. This has been successful in treating the symptoms of tinnitus and the sufferer’s anxiety stemming from the disturbing symptoms. There could be a side effect over time, creating a dependency or addiction by the sufferer to the drug therapy.
Another method to counter the imbalance is through the use of drugs that are naturally hostile to glutamate. These glutamate antagonists have been proven to assist in providing protection for the brain, but have shown some signs of acting as a hallucinogen. Researchers have attempted to combine these antagonists with other drugs such as barbiturates to limit any potential adverse neurological effects.
Memantinem, an oral med that is frequently used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, is an example of a drug that is currently used as tinnitus medication. Recent studies have shown that utilizing this drug for tinnitus was effective in suppressing glutamate when it was applied via a catheter through the ear drum. This method, caused transtympanic perfusion, is consistently able to bypass the sometimes-harmful systemic side effects that other traditional methods cause.
Another product, that contains ingredients designed to reduce the ill effects of tinnitus is called Arches Tinnitus Relief Formula®. These ingredients include Ginkgo biloba and chelated zinc, among others, and their properties in combination make this medication a very effective tinnitus medication out there for someone to use.
There are also several medications that are experimental currently under development or in the clinical approval process. One example is Caroverine, a glutamate antagonist, which is used frequently as tinnitus medication in Austria but has not yet been approved for use in America. AM-101 is another experimental drug that reportedly decreases the effects of tinnitus in test animals in laboratory conditions.
Many sufferers of tinnitus have found natural treatment plans such as “Banish Tinnitus” to be extremely effective in quickly and permanently ending the annoying buzzing noises they suffer. Banish Tinnitus is perhaps the most popular and widely used tinnitus treatment plan with thousands of successful cases reported since the product was released in late 2008. If you want to end your tinnitus quickly and easily, think seriously about usign a natural cure because they are often very effective forms of treatment.
When it comes to tinnitus medications there are no quick fixes or easy answers but recent developments show the future for viable treatments of this condition is hopeful. Perhaps we are not far from providing a solution to those who suffer from this disorder.
